Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting, hearty dish featuring well-seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich and creamy onion gravy. This classic casserole combines juicy hamburger steaks with a velvety sauce, baked to perfection in a single skillet, making it an ideal meal for cozy family dinners.

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs Ground beef – 80/20 blend for best flavor
  • ½ cup Breadcrumbs – Plain or seasoned
  • 1 Egg – Beaten
  • 1 Onion – Finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper

Creamy Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons Butter – Salted or unsalted
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour – For thickening gravy
  • 2 cups Beef broth – Low sodium preferred
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion – Sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix the Patty Ingredients: In a large bowl, gently combine 2 lbs ground beef, ½ cup breadcrumbs, 1 beaten egg, 1 finely diced onion, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper until just blended to avoid tough patties.
  2. Form Patties: Shape the beef mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped hamburger steaks. Set aside to rest while preparing the gravy base.
  3. Brown the Patties: Heat a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until they develop a golden crust. Remove patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. Sauté Onions and Make Roux: In the same skillet, melt 3 tablespoons butter and sauté 1 sliced onion until soft and translucent. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour over the onions and stir continuously for 2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
  5. Add Liquids to Make Gravy: Whisk in 2 cups beef broth and 1 cup heavy cream gradually until the mixture is smooth. Stir in 1 teaspoon garlic powder. Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it thicken slightly.
  6. Bake the Dish: Nestle the browned patties back into the skillet with the gravy. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the sauce and finish cooking the patties.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the dish to rest for 10 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld and the gravy set slightly.

Notes

  • Using an 80/20 ground beef blend ensures juicy and flavorful patties.
  • Be gentle when mixing the beef mixture; overworking can result in tough patties.
  • Using an oven-safe skillet allows you to brown and bake in the same dish, reducing cleanup.
  • Low sodium beef broth is preferred to better control saltiness in the gravy.
  • Resting the dish before serving improves texture and flavor integration.
