Delightful Apple Pie Tacos feature crispy taco-shaped flour tortillas coated in buttery vanilla wafer crumbs and cinnamon, filled with warm, creamy apple pie filling, and optionally garnished with whipped cream and caramel sauce for a fun and delicious twist on classic apple pie.

Ingredients

Taco Shells

  • 6 street taco flour tortillas (4.5 inch size)
  • ⅓ cup salted butter, melted
  • ¾ cup vanilla wafer crumbs, finely crushed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon or apple pie spice

Filling

  • 20 ounces apple pie filling (canned)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream

Optional Garnishes

  • Whipped cream
  • Caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C). Turn a muffin tin upside down, so the bottoms face up. This will be used to shape the tortillas into taco shells while baking.
  2. Prepare coatings: Pour the melted butter into a wide, shallow bowl. In another wide, shallow bowl, whisk together the vanilla wafer crumbs and ground cinnamon or apple pie spice until evenly mixed.
  3. Coat tortillas: Dip each tortilla first into the melted butter, ensuring both sides are coated, then immediately dredge it in the wafer crumb mixture, pressing lightly to adhere the coating evenly on both sides.
  4. Shape and bake taco shells: Place each coated tortilla draped over the inverted muffin tin cups to hold them in a taco shape. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Avoid underbaking to prevent chewiness.
  5. Heat filling: While shells bake, pour the canned apple pie filling into a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the filling begins to bubble. Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream to create a creamy filling.
  6. Assemble tacos: Remove the baked taco shells from the muffin tin and allow to cool slightly. Spoon the warm apple pie filling into each shell.
  7. Add garnishes: Optionally, top the filled apple pie tacos with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce for extra indulgence. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a crispier shell, ensure tortillas are fully coated and baked until golden brown.
  • You can substitute apple pie filling with homemade cooked apples for a fresher taste.
  • Use apple pie spice if you prefer a more complex flavor than just cinnamon.
  • Allow taco shells to cool before filling to prevent sogginess.
  • Whipped cream and caramel sauce are optional but add a delightful finishing touch.
