Ingredients

Apples

  • 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1½ teaspoons lemon juice

Spice Mix and Sweeteners

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • ⅓ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1½ teaspoons freshly grated ginger or ginger paste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Thickening

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1-2 tablespoons water (adjust for desired consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Mix Apples and Spices: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, grated ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, sea salt, and cornstarch until they are evenly coated with the mixture.
  3. Arrange and Bake Covered: Spread the spiced apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes to soften the apples gently.
  4. Add Water and Finish Baking: Remove the foil carefully. Stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to the apples to achieve your preferred consistency, then return the dish to the oven, uncovered, for an additional 10 to 15 minutes or until the apples reach your desired tenderness.

Notes

  • Choose good baking apple varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Cosmic Crisp, or Pink Lady for the best texture and flavor.
  • After the initial baking phase, add 1-2 tablespoons of water or apple juice depending on how saucy you want the baked apples.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat leftovers gently on the stovetop over low heat or microwave in short intervals at reduced power until warmed through.
