Baked BBQ Shredded Tofu is a flavorful and versatile vegan dish featuring super firm tofu shredded and seasoned with smoky spices, then baked to golden perfection and coated in sweet BBQ sauce. Perfect for tacos, quesadillas, or sandwiches, this recipe delivers chewy, sweet, and smoky tofu shreds with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Tofu and Seasonings

  • 16 ounce block super firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil or other neutral cooking oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt to taste (optional)

Sauce

  • ⅓ cup sweet BBQ sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the tofu.
  2. Shred Tofu: Using the large holes of a cheese grater, shred the super firm tofu along the short edge. Pull downwards to create long, farm-style shreds.
  3. Season Tofu: In a bowl, toss the shredded tofu with canola oil, soy sauce, chili powder, smoked paprika, paprika, and a sprinkle of salt if desired, ensuring even coating.
  4. Arrange on Pan: Spread the tofu into a thin layer on a parchment paper-lined half sheet pan. Lightly oil the pan if not using parchment. Some overlap is fine.
  5. Bake First Round: Bake on the middle rack for 12-15 minutes until the tofu is golden and starting to crisp around edges.
  6. Add BBQ Sauce: Remove from oven and use a spatula to toss the tofu with the sweet BBQ sauce, coating it evenly.
  7. Bake Again: Return to the oven for 6-8 more minutes until tofu is firm, sticky, and chewy with a sweet smoky glaze.
  8. Serve: Serve warm as a filling for tacos, quesadillas, or sandwiches. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Use super firm tofu for best texture; extra firm tofu tends to be more crumbly.
  • Choose any sweet BBQ sauce you prefer; Trader Joe’s or homemade vegan BBQ sauce works great.
  • For a version without BBQ sauce, simply bake with seasonings until golden and firm.
  • Leftovers keep well for 3-4 days refrigerated; reheat gently in a skillet.
  • If doubling the recipe, use a full sheet pan instead of a half sheet.
  • Recipe updated April 2025 to include soy sauce and adjusted seasonings added before baking instead of with BBQ sauce.
