Ingredients

Beef Stir Fry

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 whole white onion, cut into small pieces
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil for frying

Stir Fry Sauce

  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce or dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • ½ tablespoon vegetarian oyster sauce
  • 2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Stir Fry Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together water, light soy sauce, sweet or dark soy sauce, ketchup, sesame oil, vegetarian oyster sauce, cornstarch, and sugar until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Sauté Onions: Heat 1 tablespoon avocado oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add the diced white onion and sauté for about 2 minutes until softened and translucent. Remove onions from the pan and set aside.
  3. Brown the Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the hot pan, breaking it up as it cooks. Allow it to brown and develop a crispy sear on the bottom by not stirring immediately. This caramelization adds rich flavor. Cook until the beef is nicely browned.
  4. Add Garlic and Onions: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant. Then, add the sautéed onions back into the pan and mix well with the beef and garlic.
  5. Combine with Stir Fry Sauce: Pour the prepared stir fry sauce into the pan. Stir vigorously to combine all ingredients. Let it simmer gently until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and onions thoroughly, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Serve: Spoon the beef and onion stir fry over freshly cooked rice. For an optional creamy finish, crack an egg yolk over the hot stir fry and mix it in right before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Allow the ground beef to have a good sear before stirring to develop a flavorful crust.
  • If using sirloin or steak instead of ground beef, slice thinly for quick cooking and tender texture.
  • Ensure all ingredients are prepped and ready before cooking as this dish comes together quickly (mise en place).
  • Optional egg yolk added on top provides a rich and creamy texture.
