A refreshing Blackberry Iced Tea featuring homemade blackberry simple syrup infused with fresh blackberries and lemon juice, combined with steeped black tea and served chilled with ice and optional mint for a perfect summer beverage.

Ingredients

Blackberry Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Tea

  • 2-3 family size tea bags
  • 8 cups water, divided
  • Ice, as needed
  • Fresh mint, optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare the blackberry simple syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup water, 1 cup granulated sugar, and 3 cups fresh blackberries. Using a potato masher, gently smash the blackberries to release their juices. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat and simmer over low for 15 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  2. Steep the tea: Meanwhile, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a separate pot. Remove from heat and add 2-3 family size tea bags. Let them steep for 3-5 minutes depending on your preferred strength, then remove the tea bags and set aside.
  3. Strain the syrup: Turn off the heat under the blackberry syrup and let it cool for about 5 minutes. Pour the syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a 4-cup glass measuring cup or medium bowl. Press down on the blackberry solids with the back of a spoon to extract all the juice, then discard the solids.
  4. Combine tea and syrup: Pour the strained blackberry syrup into a large pitcher. Add the hot brewed tea and then 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher. Stir well to combine. You can mix all the syrup into the tea or keep the syrup separate in a small pourable container to serve alongside the tea.
  5. Serve: Add ice cubes to the pitcher or individual glasses. Garnish with whole blackberries and fresh mint leaves if desired. Serve chilled for a refreshing drink.

Notes

  • Instead of mixing all the simple syrup into the tea, keep some syrup in a pourable container to add to taste when serving.
  • Straining the blackberry syrup into a 4-cup glass measuring cup makes it easier to pour into the pitcher.
  • The blackberry simple syrup can be stored up to 3-4 weeks in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • The prepared blackberry iced tea will keep fresh up to 5 days when refrigerated.
