Cheesy Garlic Potatoes Gratin is a rich and comforting dish featuring thinly sliced Yukon Gold potatoes baked in a creamy garlic-infused sauce with melted Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses. This classic side is perfect for holiday meals or cozy family dinners, delivering a golden, bubbly top and tender, flavorful layers inside.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes

Cream Sauce

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme

Cheeses

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the potatoes: Peel and thinly slice the Yukon Gold potatoes into 1/8-inch thick rounds. Place the slices in cold water to prevent them from browning while you prepare the other ingredients.
  3. Make the garlic cream sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Pour in the heavy cream and season with salt, black pepper, and thyme. Let it simmer gently for 5 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  4. Dry and layer the potatoes: Drain the potato slices and pat them dry with a clean towel. Begin layering one-third of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish. Pour a portion of the garlic cream sauce over the layer, then sprinkle a mixture of Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses on top. Repeat this process two more times, finishing with a generous layer of cheese on top.
  5. Bake covered: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to allow the potatoes to cook through and the flavors to meld.
  6. Bake uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20 to 25 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Rest before serving: Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes outside the oven to let the layers set firmly, which will make for easy and clean slices when serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer to achieve even, thin potato slices for uniform cooking.
  • Allowing the dish to rest after baking helps the layers firm up for cleaner slices and better presentation.
  • For a flavor twist, stir in a teaspoon of Dijon mustard into the cream sauce before layering.
