This Creepy Shepherd’s Pie recipe transforms the classic comfort food into a fun, spooky dish perfect for Halloween or themed dinners. Ground beef and mixed vegetables are cooked in a rich sauce, topped with creamy mashed potato ‘ghosts’ piped individually and adorned with peppercorn eyes, then baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetable Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ cups frozen mixed veggies (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Mashed Potatoes

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Decorations

  • Black peppercorns (for eyes)

Instructions

  1. Cook the potatoes: Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a pot of cold, salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain thoroughly to remove excess water.
  2. Make mashed potatoes: While still hot, mash the potatoes with unsalted butter, milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Allow the mash to cool slightly so it thickens for easier piping.
  3. Cook the beef and veggies: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing for 2–3 minutes until translucent. Add ground beef and cook until fully browned. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, frozen mixed vegetables, and beef broth. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer the mixture until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.
  4. Assemble the filling: Spoon the cooked meat and vegetable mixture evenly into a 9×9-inch baking dish, smoothing the top for an even base layer.
  5. Pipe mashed potato ghosts: Transfer the cooled mashed potatoes into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe tall, swirl-shaped ‘ghosts’ over the meat mixture, resembling ice cream cones. Place black peppercorns on each ghost to mimic eyes.
  6. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the assembled shepherd’s pie for 20–25 minutes, or until the mashed potato ghosts are lightly golden on top and the filling is bubbly.

Notes

  • Ensure potatoes are cooked hot and mashed immediately to avoid gluey texture.
  • Simmer the meat filling long enough to thicken properly, preventing a soupy pie.
  • Allow mashed potatoes to cool slightly before piping to maintain shape and avoid slumping.
  • Don’t overfill the piping bag to keep control over the ghost shapes.
