These Crispy Cajun Tofu Bites are a deliciously seasoned, crunchy snack or appetizer perfect for anyone craving a flavorful, plant-based protein. Coated in a homemade Cajun spice blend and cooked to golden perfection using pan-frying, baking, or air-frying methods, these tofu bites are wonderfully versatile and packed with smoky, spicy flavors that satisfy both vegans and vegetarians.

Ingredients

For the Tofu:

  • 1 block (14-16 ounces / 400-450g) extra-firm or super-firm tofu, pressed
  • 1/4 cup (30g) cornstarch (ensure gluten-free if needed)
  • 2-3 tablespoons neutral flavored oil (avocado, canola, grapeseed) for pan-frying, or 1-2 tablespoons for baking/air frying

For the Homemade Cajun Seasoning Blend:

  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: pinch of white pepper
  • Optional: tiny pinch of red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Press the Tofu (Crucial for Crispiness!)

Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain excess water. Use a tofu press or wrap tofu in paper towels and weight it down with a heavy object for 30 to 60 minutes to extract moisture and ensure a firm, dry texture for crispier bites.

  2. Prepare the Cajun Seasoning

While the tofu presses, combine smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, crushed oregano, thyme, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper in a small bowl. Whisk thoroughly to blend the spices evenly and adjust seasoning if needed.

  3. Cube the Tofu

Unwrap the pressed tofu and pat dry. Cut into uniform 3/4-inch to 1-inch cubes or tear into nugget-like pieces for a textured finish, ensuring even cooking.

  4. Coat the Tofu

In a large bowl or ziplock bag, mix cornstarch with the Cajun seasoning. Add tofu cubes and gently toss or shake until evenly dusted with a thin coating. Shake off excess cornstarch to avoid clumping.

  5. Cook the Tofu (Choose Your Method)

Pan-Frying: Heat 2-3 tablespoons oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry tofu cubes in batches for 3-5 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
Baking: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange tofu on parchment-lined sheet, lightly oil if desired, and bake for 20-30 minutes, flipping halfway until crispy.
Air-Frying: Preheat air fryer to 390°F (195-200°C). Lightly oil basket. Cook tofu in single layer for 10-15 minutes, shaking or flipping halfway, until golden and crisp.

  6. Serve and Enjoy!

Serve the crispy Cajun tofu bites immediately for the best texture and flavor. These bites pair wonderfully as snacks, appetizers, or protein additions to salads and bowls.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu adequately is essential for achieving a crispy texture.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper to control spice level; reduce for mild, increase for heat.
  • Use gluten-free cornstarch to keep recipe gluten-free.
  • Pan-frying yields the crispiest texture, baking is healthier, and air-frying is quickest and super crispy.
  • Do not overcrowd pan or air fryer to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in a skillet or air fryer to regain crispness.
