Ingredients

Slow Cooker Ingredients

  • 1 kg (4.25 cups) Braising steak
  • 200 g (0.75 cups) Curry spice paste
  • 2 Onions, peeled and chopped (about 300g or 2.5 cups if using pre-chopped)
  • 4 Cloves garlic, peeled and chopped (about 20g or 4 teaspoons if pre-chopped)
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped (about 5g or 1 tablespoon)
  • 2 tbsp Ground cumin
  • 400 g (2.5 cups) Tin of tomatoes
  • 2 tsp Garam masala (divided use)
  • 1 tsp Sea salt
  • 1 Beef stock cube, undiluted, crumbled

To Serve

  • 100 g (3.0 cups) Spinach leaves
  • 2 tsp Garam masala
  • 4 tbsp Mango chutney

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Slow Cooker Ingredients: Add the braising steak, curry spice paste, chopped onions, garlic, ginger, ground cumin, tin of tomatoes, 2 tsp garam masala (reserve 2 tsp for later), sea salt, and crumbled beef stock cube into the slow cooker.
  2. Slow Cook the Curry: Cook on HIGH for 4 hours or on LOW for 6 hours, allowing the meat to become tender and the flavors to meld together perfectly.
  3. Add Spinach and Final Seasoning: About 10 minutes before serving, stir in the spinach leaves, remaining 2 tsp garam masala, and the mango chutney. Let the spinach wilt gently in the residual heat of the curry.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Spoon the flavorful beef curry over rice or with your preferred side, and enjoy a comforting, homemade curry meal.

Notes

  • Beef Braising Steak: Braising steak includes cuts like chuck, skirt, leg, and flank, suitable for slow cooking. It may also be labelled as stewing steak. Any slow-cook suitable cut of beef will work well.
  • Curry Paste: Use any curry paste to your preference; popular choices include Patak’s Jalfrezi or Madras pastes for authentic flavor.
  • Onions, Garlic, and Ginger: Pre-prepared frozen chopped versions can ease prep: 2 onions equal about 300g (2.5 cups), 4 garlic cloves about 20g (4 tsp), and 1 inch ginger about 5g (1 tbsp).
  • Spinach: For fresh spinach, stir in at the end to wilt. If using frozen spinach, defrost and drain excess water before adding to avoid a watery curry. Optionally, cook and drain fresh spinach separately if you prefer a thicker consistency.
