Ingredients

Meat and Seasonings

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp dried parsley
  • ½ tsp salt
  • pepper, to taste

Liquids and Sauces

  • 28 oz marinara sauce
  • ½ cup chicken broth

Dairy

  • 4 oz mozzarella, shredded or sliced
  • ¼ cup fresh Parmigiano Reggiano, grated

Pasta

  • 24 oz potato gnocchi

Optional

  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish and added flavor

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef: Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef, and cook until browned. Drain off any excess grease to keep the dish from being too oily.
  2. Sauté aromatics and seasonings: Add olive oil, chopped onion, minced garlic, onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried parsley, salt, and pepper to the pan. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-5 minutes until the onion softens and the spices are fragrant.
  3. Add marinara and broth: Stir in the marinara sauce and chicken broth, combining thoroughly with the meat and aromatics.
  4. Simmer the sauce: Reduce heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it simmer gently for 20 minutes to develop flavor and thicken slightly.
  5. Cook the gnocchi: Add the potato gnocchi to the pan, stir well to incorporate, then cover again and simmer for an additional 10 minutes until the gnocchi are tender and cooked through.
  6. Add cheese: Stir in the mozzarella cheese to melt into the sauce, then sprinkle the grated Parmigiano Reggiano evenly over the top.
  7. Serve: Optionally garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving hot for an extra layer of flavor and freshness.

Notes

  • Adding fresh basil at the end adds a vibrant, aromatic flavor that complements the tomato and cheese beautifully.
  • For a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with plant-based ground meat or sautéed mushrooms.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add red pepper flakes when sautéing the aromatics.
  • Use fresh gnocchi if available for a softer texture, but frozen works well too.
