Ingredients

Sausage

  • 8 ounces Italian Sausage, casings removed and torn into pieces or use bulk sausage (mild or hot)

Bread and Toppings

  • 1 Loaf French Bread, about 18 inches long
  • 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • ¾ to 1 cup Pasta Sauce (meatless variety or pizza sauce)
  • 7 to 8 ounces Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • 2 tablespoons White Onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons Black Olives, thinly sliced

Seasonings and Optional

  • ½ teaspoon Dried Oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • Crushed Red Pepper, for serving (optional)
  • Parmesan Cheese, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Sausage: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently and breaking up any large pieces, until fully cooked and browned.
  2. Drain the Sausage: Remove the cooked sausage from the skillet and transfer it to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess fat.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the pizzas.
  4. Prepare the Bread: Cut the French bread loaf in half lengthwise to create two 9-inch sections. Then slice each piece lengthwise again to open it up flat, making four total pieces. Brush the inside surfaces of each piece evenly with olive oil.
  5. Add Sauce: Spoon pasta sauce onto each piece and spread it thinly and evenly over the surface.
  6. Layer Cheese and Toppings: Sprinkle about ¾ of the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over all four bread pieces. Reserve about ½ cup cheese to add later. Distribute the cooked sausage, sliced onions, and black olives evenly across the pizzas.
  7. Final Cheese and Seasoning: Top each pizza with the reserved mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle dried oregano and garlic powder evenly over the pizzas for extra flavor.
  8. Bake the Pizzas: Place the prepared bread pizzas on a baking sheet lined with a cooling rack if available. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly and the edges of the bread are toasted. Check at 12 minutes to avoid overcooking and adjust time accordingly.
  9. Serve: Remove the pizzas from the oven and serve immediately. Optionally, add crushed red pepper flakes and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese to taste.

Notes

  • You can substitute bulk sausage for casings removed sausage if preferred.
  • If you prefer a spicier pizza, use hot Italian sausage or add more crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Using a cooling rack on the baking sheet helps the bread crisp up evenly on all sides.
  • This recipe can be customized with other toppings like bell peppers or mushrooms as desired.
  • Leftover pizzas can be stored in the fridge and reheated in the oven or toaster oven for best texture.
