Crispy, golden gluten-free onion rings made with a flavorful, crunchy batter using gluten-free flour blend and cornmeal. Perfectly fried and served warm, these onion rings make a delicious snack or side dish suitable for those avoiding gluten.

Ingredients

Onions and Coating

  • 2 medium sweet onions, sliced into rings
  • Cornstarch, enough to dust sliced onions
  • Neutral oil, for frying (such as vegetable or canola oil)

Gluten Free Batter

  • ⅓ cup cornstarch
  • 1 ½ cups gluten free flour blend
  • ¼ cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup milk of your choice (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 cup club soda

Instructions

  1. Prepare Onion Rings: If your onions are not pre-sliced, slice the 2 medium sweet onions into rings about ¼ inch thick. Lightly dust the sliced onion rings with cornstarch to help the batter adhere better. Set aside.
  2. Make the Batter: In a large bowl, combine ⅓ cup cornstarch, 1 ½ cups gluten-free flour blend, ¼ cup cornmeal, 1 teaspoon paprika, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, and 2 teaspoons salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together until evenly mixed. Then, slowly whisk in 1 cup milk and 1 cup club soda until you form a smooth, slightly thick batter.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a large saucepan or deep skillet, heat enough neutral oil to about 2 inches deep to 350° Fahrenheit (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain consistent temperature for even frying.
  4. Batter and Fry Onion Rings: Using a fork or tongs, dip each cornstarch-dusted onion ring into the batter, coating it evenly. Lift the ring and allow any excess batter to drip off before carefully placing the ring into the hot oil. Fry the onion rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
  5. Drain and Serve: Use a fork or slotted spoon to remove the fried onion rings from the oil. Place them on a wire cooling rack set over a baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat the frying process with remaining onion rings. Serve warm with your favorite condiments such as ketchup, ranch dip, or spicy mayo.

Notes

  • You may substitute milk with any dairy-free alternative such as almond milk or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Maintaining oil temperature is key to ensure crispy onion rings without greasy absorption.
  • Use gluten-free flour blend that includes xanthan gum for better binding and texture.
  • Adjust seasoning in batter to taste; adding cayenne pepper can add a spicy kick.
