A creamy and flavorful Harissa Hummus blending traditional chickpeas with spicy harissa paste and aromatic spices for a delicious Middle Eastern-inspired dip or spread.

Ingredients

Hummus Base

  • 15 oz chickpeas, drained
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt (Diamond Crystal brand recommended)
  • ½ cup tahini
  • 1½ teaspoon harissa paste (DHA brand preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon harissa spice powder
  • ½ cup ice water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Measure out all ingredients including chickpeas, kosher salt, tahini, harissa paste and powder, ice water, lemon juice, and olive oil. Having everything ready ensures a smooth blending process.
  2. Blend Mixture: Place the chickpeas, salt, tahini, harissa paste, harissa spice powder, ice water, and lemon juice into a food processor or a high-powered blender. Blend on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed for an even consistency.
  3. Incorporate Olive Oil: With the blender running on low speed, slowly drizzle in half of the extra virgin olive oil to emulsify into the hummus, enhancing richness and texture.
  4. Serve and Garnish: Pour the finished hummus into a serving dish and drizzle the remaining olive oil over the top for a glossy finish and added flavor.

Notes

  • A high-powered blender like a Vita Prep produces the smoothest hummus, but a regular food processor or blender works fine if necessary.
  • Using ice water is essential to achieve an ultra-creamy texture without thinning out the flavor.
  • This hummus can be made up to 5 days in advance; store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • Serve with pita, naan, fresh vegetables, or use as a flavorful spread or dip on chicken shawarma pita, falafel pita, or rice bowls.
