Ingredients

For the Pizza Crust

  • 1 ¾ Cups all-purpose flour, gluten-free or regular
  • 3 Tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated
  • ½ Teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ Teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ Teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 Cup water, warm
  • 3 Tablespoons olive oil

Oil for the Crust

  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ Teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ Teaspoon garlic powder

Optional Toppings

  • Pizza sauce, any kind, as needed
  • Mozzarella cheese, fresh, small balls or slices
  • Basil, fresh
  • Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • Pepperoni, gluten-free if needed
  • Parmesan cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Make the Crust: In a mixing bowl, pour the warm water and honey, add the yeast and let it sit for 5 minutes to bloom until foamy. Then add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and all remaining dough ingredients. Mix well until combined; the dough will be thick and sticky.
  2. Proof the Dough: Form the dough into a ball in the bowl, drizzle it with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, cover with a tea towel or plastic wrap, and let it rest in a warm area for 45 to 90 minutes until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat Oven and Shape Dough: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Lightly oil a cookie sheet or pizza pan. Roll out the dough on the prepared pan and gently press it into a heart shape. Set aside and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  4. Prepare the Seasoned Oil: In a microwave-safe dish, combine butter, olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and Italian seasoning. Microwave on high for 10 seconds or until melted, then stir to combine.
  5. Brush Dough with Seasoned Oil: Brush the garlic butter mixture evenly over the top of the dough, ensuring the edges are well coated.
  6. Bake the Crust: Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 7 to 10 minutes until it’s just barely set and not doughy.
  7. Add Toppings: Remove the crust from the oven and spread your desired amount of pizza sauce, then layer with mozzarella cheese, basil, cherry tomatoes, pepperoni, and a sprinkle of shredded parmesan cheese as desired.
  8. Bake the Assembled Pizza: Increase the oven temperature to 500°F (260°C) and bake the pizza for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown. Watch closely to avoid burning.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove the pizza from the oven, let it sit for a few minutes to cool slightly, sprinkle with fresh basil if desired, cut into slices, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Don’t worry about creating a perfectly symmetrical heart shape; rustic charm is part of the appeal.
  • This recipe makes one large heart-shaped pizza, but you can make mini heart pizzas if preferred.
  • Let the pizza rest a few minutes after baking to avoid burning your mouth while eating.
