This refreshing, chilled dessert is perfect for warm days and gatherings, offering a delightful combination of textures and flavors without turning on the oven.

Ingredients

Angel Food Cake

  • 16 ounce box angel food cake mix, prepared according to directions (only half used for the recipe)

Fruit Layer

  • 21 ounce can strawberry pie filling

Creamy Filling

  • 8 ounce block cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 3.4 ounce box Jell-O vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • 2 ½ teaspoons fresh squeezed lemon juice (optional)

Topping

  • 8 ounce container Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed
  • Sliced almonds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Angel Food Cake: Prepare the angel food cake mix according to package directions. Once baked and cooled, cut the prepared cake in half and then into 1-inch cubes. You will only use half of the prepared cake for this recipe; freeze or store the other half for later use.
  2. Layer Cake and Strawberry Filling: Place half of the cubed angel food cake in a single layer on the bottom of an ungreased 9×9 inch baking dish. Spoon 2/3 of the strawberry pie filling evenly over the cake layer. Save the remaining pie filling for topping later. Then, add the remaining cake cubes on top of the strawberry layer in an even layer.
  3. Make Creamy Mixture: In a medium mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with a hand mixer until smooth. Add the vanilla instant pudding mix, whole milk, and fresh lemon juice (if using), mixing slowly until fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Add Creamy Layer and Chill: Pour the pudding and cream cheese mixture evenly over the layered cake and strawberry filling. Cover the dish and refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours to allow the pudding mixture to set and the flavors to meld together.
  5. Add Topping and Garnish: Once set, spread the thawed Cool Whip evenly over the top of the dessert. Spoon the reserved strawberry pie filling over the Cool Whip and swirl gently for a decorative effect. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top if desired for added texture and garnish. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Only use half of the prepared angel food cake for this dessert; the other half can be frozen or saved for another use.
  • The fresh lemon juice is optional but adds a nice brightness to the creamy filling.
  • For a dairy-free variation, substitute cream cheese, milk, pudding mix, and whipped topping with dairy-free alternatives.
  • Sliced almonds add a pleasant crunch but can be omitted if there are nut allergies.
  • Chilling the dessert for at least 3 hours is essential for proper setting and flavor melding.
