This Taco Bell Chalupa Supreme recipe offers a homemade version of the iconic crispy fried taco shell filled with seasoned ground beef, fresh vegetables, and creamy toppings. It features a tender fried chalupa shell made from scratch, a flavorful beef mixture seasoned with taco spices and salsa, and classic toppings like sour cream, shredded lettuce, Mexican cheese blend, and diced tomatoes for a satisfying Tex-Mex meal.

Ingredients

For the Chalupas:

  • 2 ½ cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil plus more for Frying
  • 1 Cup Milk (preferably room temperature)

For the Beef Mixture:

  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • 1 small Onion, chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons Taco Seasoning
  • ¼ cup Salsa
  • ¼ cup Water

For the Toppings:

  • ½ cup Sour Cream
  • 2 cups Shredded Lettuce
  • 2 cups Shredded Mexican Cheese Blend
  • 2 Tomatoes, diced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chalupa Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix in 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Gradually stir in the milk, then add the remaining flour until a dough forms. Knead the dough with your hands, adding more milk if too dry or more flour if too wet.
  2. Shape the Chalupas: Form the dough into a long log and cut it into 8 equal parts. On a floured surface, shape each part into a 6-inch round circle. Poke a few holes in each circle using a fork to prevent bubbles while frying.
  3. Fry the Chalupa Shells: Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot to 350°F. Fry each disk for 5 seconds on each side, then carefully fold it in half with tongs to form a taco shape. Hold each side in the oil for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels. Repeat for all shells.
  4. Cook the Beef Mixture: In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef with chopped onion until fully cooked and browned. Drain excess grease. Stir in water, taco seasoning, and salsa, then cook uncovered for 3-5 minutes to combine flavors. Remove from heat.
  5. Assemble the Chalupas: Fill each fried chalupa shell with a portion of the beef mixture. Top with sour cream, shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, and diced tomatoes. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Refrigerate leftovers separately in airtight containers for up to 5 days for best freshness.
  • Use room temperature milk when preparing the chalupa dough for better consistency.
  • Be cautious when frying to maintain oil temperature around 350°F for optimal crispiness.
  • You can customize toppings to your preference such as adding guacamole or hot sauce.
