Homemade Uncrustables are a fun and easy-to-make alternative to store-bought sealed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Using thinly sliced sandwich bread, peanut butter, and your favorite jelly or jam, these perfectly sealed sandwiches are shaped with a sandwich sealer or similar tool. Ideal for freezing and quick lunches, they thaw conveniently for a no-fuss meal or snack anytime.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 12 slices sandwich bread, thinly sliced
  • 6 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 4 tablespoons jelly or jam

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bread Rounds: Place a slice of sandwich bread on a cutting board, then use the outer ring of the sandwich sealer to cut a round circle from the middle of the slice. Repeat until you have 12 bread rounds, setting aside the bread remnants for other uses like breadcrumbs or croutons.
  2. Apply Peanut Butter: Spread approximately 1 ½ teaspoons of peanut butter evenly on each round, leaving a ¼ inch margin around the edges to allow for sealing.
  3. Add Jelly on Half: Spread a thin, even layer of jelly or jam on 6 of the peanut butter-coated rounds, also keeping the ¼ inch edge clear.
  4. Assemble Sandwiches: Pair each jelly and peanut butter round with a plain peanut butter round on top. Place the sandwich inside the sandwich sealer’s outer ring, then press down firmly with the inner ring to seal the sandwich edges tightly together.
  5. Freeze for Storage: Place the sealed sandwiches on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 2-3 hours or until solid. Once frozen, transfer the sandwiches to labeled freezer bags, removing excess air before sealing.
  6. Thaw and Serve: To enjoy, thaw frozen sandwiches at room temperature for 30-60 minutes or pack directly in lunch containers; they will thaw by mealtime, making them a convenient grab-and-go option.

Notes

  • Storage: Homemade Uncrustables can be frozen for up to 2 months. For best results, wrap each sandwich individually in plastic wrap before placing them in freezer bags.
  • Without a sandwich sealer/maker: Use a wide-mouth canning ring to cut the bread rounds, then flip it inside out to seal. Alternatively, use a biscuit or cookie cutter and press edges with a fork to seal the sandwiches.
