Ideal for holiday meals or any special occasion, cooking a turkey in a bag reduces cooking time and cleanup.

Ingredients

Turkey and Seasoning

  • 12-24 lb Whole Turkey, fully thawed
  • ½ cup Butter, softened
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Salt
  • 1 Tbsp Pepper

Vegetables

  • 1 white onion, peeled and cut into large chunks
  • 2 carrots, peeled and chopped into large pieces
  • 3 celery ribs, cut into large pieces

Other

  • Turkey size Oven Bag
  • 1 Tbsp Flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and position the oven rack one level lower than the center to ensure even heat distribution for the turkey.
  2. Prepare Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, salt, and pepper until well mixed to create a flavorful rub for the turkey.
  3. Prepare Turkey: Remove the neck and giblets from the turkey cavity. Tuck the wings underneath the bird to prevent burning during cooking; optionally, you can tie them back for a tidier appearance.
  4. Apply Butter Rub: Generously rub the butter mixture all over the turkey’s skin, ensuring full coverage for optimal flavor and moisture retention.
  5. Prepare Oven Bag: Place the tablespoon of flour inside the oven bag, shake it to evenly coat the interior surface to prevent sticking during cooking.
  6. Add Vegetables and Turkey to Bag: Place the chopped onion, carrots, and celery inside the oven bag first, then carefully place the seasoned turkey on top of the vegetables inside the bag.
  7. Seal and Place in Roasting Pan: Close the oven bag securely with the provided tie and place the bag with all ingredients into a roasting pan suitable for the oven.
  8. Vent the Bag: Using scissors or a knife, cut several small slits on top of the oven bag to allow steam to escape safely while cooking.
  9. Cook the Turkey: Roast the turkey in the preheated oven, adjusting cooking time based on weight: 12-15 lb for 2 to 2½ hours, 15-20 lb for 2½ to 3 hours, and 20-24 lb for 3 to 3½ hours. Use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  10. Rest Turkey: Once cooked, remove the roasting pan from the oven and let the turkey rest for 20 minutes inside the bag for juices to redistribute.
  11. Carve and Serve: Carefully cut open the oven bag, transfer the turkey to a serving platter, carve, and enjoy your moist and flavorful turkey.

Notes

  • Ensure the turkey is fully thawed before cooking to guarantee even cooking.
  • Tying the wings back helps prevent burning and promotes an even shape.
  • Use a meat thermometer to avoid undercooking or overcooking the turkey.
  • Let the turkey rest after cooking to keep it juicy and easier to carve.
  • The roasting bag reduces cleanup and keeps your oven cleaner by containing juices.
  • You can add herbs such as rosemary or thyme to the vegetables for extra flavor if desired.
