Ingredients

Tofu

  • 1 lb block of tofu, pressed for at least 30 minutes and cut into 1-inch pieces

Marinade

  • 1/4 cup light soy sauce (or liquid aminos, tamari, or coconut aminos)
  • 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 4 teaspoons agave
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons water

Cooking

  • 2 teaspoons oil (any kind)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Press the tofu block for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into 1-inch pieces. This step ensures the tofu will absorb the marinade better and crisp up nicely while cooking.
  2. Make the Marinade and Marinate the Tofu: In a medium bowl, place the cubed tofu. Add 1/4 cup light soy sauce and toss to coat the tofu evenly. Add rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, agave, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, smoked paprika, and water to the bowl. Toss all ingredients thoroughly to ensure every tofu piece is well-coated. Let the tofu marinate for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 days for deeper flavor.
  3. Prepare to Cook the Tofu: Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Remove tofu pieces from the marinade (keeping leftover marinade separate) and place them carefully into the hot pan.
  4. Crisp the Tofu: Cook the tofu for about 2-3 minutes on each side until all sides are golden brown and crisp. This will give the tofu a wonderful texture that contrasts nicely with the marinade.
  5. Thicken the Sauce: While the tofu is cooking, whisk 1 teaspoon cornstarch into the leftover marinade vigorously. This will thicken the sauce once heated.
  6. Combine Tofu and Sauce: After the tofu finishes cooking, turn off the heat. Immediately pour in the thickened marinade sauce, stirring gently to coat all tofu pieces. The residual heat will cook off the cornstarch and thicken the sauce further. Let it sit for at least 2 minutes to meld flavors before serving.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Remove from heat and serve your delicious marinated tofu as a main dish or part of a bowl, salad, or wrap. Enjoy the depth of flavor and crispy texture!

Notes

  • Press tofu well to remove excess water for better marinade absorption and crispiness.
  • Use light soy sauce to avoid overly salty flavor; tamari or coconut aminos are great gluten-free alternatives.
  • Letting tofu marinate longer, up to 2 days, intensifies the flavor.
  • The cornstarch in the marinade helps create a glossy, thick sauce that clings to the tofu.
  • This recipe is versatile and the tofu can be finished in the oven, air fryer, or on the grill instead of pan-frying.
  • For best results, cook tofu in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding the pan.
