Ingredients

Mushrooms & Aromatics

  • 7 ounces shiitake mushrooms – torn into smaller pieces
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 garlic cloves – minced
  • 8 scallions – roughly chopped
  • 1 cup frozen peas

Sauce

  • 3 tbsp low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp honey

Dumplings & Garnishes

  • 1 pound dumplings with your favorite filling, thawed
  • Freshly ground black pepper – for serving
  • Chili flakes – for serving
  • Sesame seeds – for serving
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  1. Prep the ingredients: Tear the shiitake mushrooms into smaller pieces. Roughly chop the scallions and mince the garlic cloves to have everything ready for cooking.
  2. Cook shiitakes: Heat a skillet over high heat until hot. Add the shiitake mushrooms and cook for 1 minute to start releasing their moisture. Then add the vegetable oil and continue cooking for 2 more minutes until the mushrooms are crispy and golden brown.
  3. Add aromatics and peas: Stir in the unsalted butter to the skillet. Then add minced garlic, chopped scallions, and frozen peas, cooking for 2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and the peas are warmed through.
  4. Make the sauce: Stir in low sodium soy sauce, mirin, and sesame oil. Cook for 1 minute to allow the flavors to meld. Finally, mix in the honey to add a subtle sweetness.
  5. Cook the dumplings: Add the thawed dumplings to the skillet along with ¼ cup of water. Cover and cook for 3 minutes or according to the dumpling package instructions until heated through and tender. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning by adding an extra teaspoon of soy sauce for saltiness or a splash of water to tone it down.
  6. Finish and serve: Sprinkle freshly ground black pepper and chili flakes over the dish to your preference. Garnish with sesame seeds. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious one-skillet meal!

Notes

  • The recipe works well with any preferred dumpling filling, such as pork, chicken, or vegetable.
  • Adjust the soy sauce quantity depending on your salt preference or use tamari for a gluten-free option.
  • For added spice, increase the amount of chili flakes or add sliced fresh chili.
  • Use a non-stick skillet to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  • You can substitute frozen peas with edamame or snap peas for a different texture.
