Philly Cheesesteak Balls are a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich, featuring a flavorful combination of sautéed onions, bell peppers, roast beef, garlic, and melted American and provolone cheeses all wrapped in soft yeast dinner roll dough and baked to golden perfection. These bite-sized delights make a perfect party appetizer or a fun meal for any cheesesteak lover.

Ingredients

Rolls

  • 12 Rhodes Yeast Dinner Rolls, thawed
  • 2 Tbsp butter (for sautéing and optional brushing)

Filling

  • ½ onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 7 oz roast beef deli meat, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste (fresh cracked preferred)

Cheese

  • 6 slices American cheese, cut into 4 pieces each
  • 6 slices provolone cheese, cut into 4 pieces each

Instructions

  1. Thaw Rolls: Place the Rhodes yeast dinner rolls onto a greased baking sheet covered with sprayed plastic wrap. Allow them to thaw for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until thawed but still cold. Alternatively, you may thaw overnight in the refrigerator for convenience.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper, sautéing for about 5-7 minutes or until they become soft and fragrant.
  3. Add Meat and Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and chopped roast beef deli meat into the skillet. Season generously with salt and freshly cracked pepper. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the garlic and meat brown slightly and release a savory aroma.
  4. Season Filling: Pour in the Worcestershire sauce and stir thoroughly to allow the flavors to absorb. Then remove the skillet from heat and allow the filling mixture to cool for a few minutes, making it easier to handle.
  5. Prepare Rolls: Roll each thawed Rhodes roll dough out flat with a rolling pin to approximately 1/8-inch thickness. Place two pieces of American cheese and two pieces of provolone cheese in the center of each flattened dough piece.
  6. Fill and Shape: Top the cheese with an even amount of the cooled roast beef mixture. Carefully gather the edges of the dough upwards and pinch the seams tightly to seal the cheesesteak filling inside, forming a ball.
  7. Arrange for Baking: Place the rolled and filled dough balls seam side down onto a baking sheet that has been greased with cooking spray or lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  8. Bake: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Bake the Philly cheesesteak balls for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown on both the top and bottom.
  9. Optional Butter Glaze: Once out of the oven, optionally brush the tops of the baked rolls with melted butter for extra flavor and shine. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Thaw Rhodes rolls completely but keep them cold for best rolling results.
  • You can substitute the roast beef with thinly sliced ribeye steak for a more authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor.
  • Adjust the quantity of cheese according to your preference for gooeyness.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven for best texture.
  • These cheesesteak balls can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
