Ingredients

Bread

  • 1 loaf French or Italian Bread

Garlic Butter Mixture

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature (can use salted butter and reduce added salt)
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic (fresh preferred)
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional, divided use)

Cheese Mixture

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella and provolone cheese mix (or all mozzarella)
  • ¼ cup full-fat mayonnaise

For Serving

  • Marinara sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for baking the garlic cheese bread.
  2. Slice the Bread: Cut the French or Italian bread into slices about 1 to 1½ inches thick to create individual bread pieces for topping.
  3. Make Garlic Butter Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, salt, grated Parmesan cheese, and a portion of the chopped parsley. Mix thoroughly until combined and set aside.
  4. Prepare Baking Sheet and Butter Bread: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Butter both sides of each bread slice generously with the garlic butter mixture and arrange the slices evenly on the baking sheet.
  5. Prepare Cheese Mixture: In another medium bowl, mix the shredded mozzarella provolone cheese blend with the full-fat mayonnaise. Stir well, even though the mixture will be thick and clumpy, ensuring it’s evenly combined.
  6. Spread Cheese on Bread: Spoon about one generous tablespoon of the cheese mixture onto the top of each bread slice. Use a knife to press down and spread the cheese mixture evenly to cover the slice.
  7. Bake the Bread: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 13 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and starts to turn golden brown.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Once baked, sprinkle the remaining chopped fresh parsley over the top of the bread slices for a fresh aroma and color. Serve warm with your favorite marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • You can substitute salted butter if desired, but reduce or omit the added salt accordingly.
  • Fresh minced garlic provides the best flavor, but garlic powder can be used in a pinch.
  • The mayonnaise in the cheese mixture helps achieve a creamy, rich texture similar to the restaurant version.
  • Using a shredded mix of mozzarella and provolone enhances the flavor complexity, but mozzarella alone works fine too.
  • For a low-sodium option, adjust salt amounts and use low-sodium cheeses.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor, as the bread may become soggy if stored too long.
