Puppy Chow Popcorn is a deliciously addictive snack combining crispy popcorn coated in a rich blend of melted chocolate, creamy peanut butter, and butter, then dusted generously with powdered sugar. This treat is perfect for parties, movie nights, or anytime you crave a sweet and crunchy bite. Easy to make and customizable, the recipe delivers a perfect balance of chocolatey sweetness and nutty flavor.

Ingredients

Popcorn

  • 10-11 cups plain popcorn (from 2 bags of 3.29 ounces each, can be buttered or kettle)

Sauce

  • 1 ½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Coating

  • 3 cups powdered sugar, divided

Instructions

  1. Prepare Popcorn: Place 10-11 cups of plain popcorn into a large bowl, carefully removing any unpopped kernels to avoid unpleasant bites later.
  2. Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Sauce: In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine semisweet chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and unsalted butter. Stir frequently and cook gently until fully melted and smooth. Remove from heat, then stir in vanilla extract for added flavor.
  3. Coat Popcorn: Pour the melted chocolate peanut butter mixture over the popcorn. Use a spatula or large spoon to stir thoroughly until every popcorn piece is evenly coated with the sauce.
  4. First Sugar Coating: Add 1 cup of powdered sugar into a large gallon-size resealable plastic bag. Divide the coated popcorn in half, placing one half into the bag. Add ½ cup of powdered sugar on top, seal the bag tightly, and shake vigorously until the popcorn pieces are well coated with powdered sugar. Spread the popcorn onto waxed paper to cool.
  5. Repeat Sugar Coating: Repeat the sugar coating process with the remaining popcorn: place it into the plastic bag, add remaining powdered sugar, seal, and shake well. Spread on waxed paper to cool completely.
  6. Store or Serve: Serve the Puppy Chow Popcorn immediately for optimal freshness and crunch, or transfer to an airtight container for storage. It can be kept at room temperature for up to 5 days or refrigerated to prolong freshness.

Notes

  • You can use unpopped popcorn kernels (about 1/3 to 1/2 cup) instead of microwave popcorn bags to yield 10-11 cups of popped popcorn.
  • Use medium-low heat when melting the chocolate mixture and stir often to prevent scorching the chocolate.
  • Feel free to add festive sprinkles, M&Ms, or other candies for added texture and color.
  • This recipe can be made up to 3 days in advance. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or refrigerate to extend freshness.
