This Roasted Apple Cranberry Relish is a warm, naturally sweetened side dish perfect for holiday meals or cozy dinners. Featuring fresh cranberries and diced apples roasted to a thick, jam-like consistency with warm spices and a hint of lemon juice, this relish combines tartness with sweetness in a comforting, easy-to-make recipe.

Ingredients

Fruits

  • 12 oz bag fresh cranberries
  • 3 medium apples (about 1.5 lbs), peeled, cored, and cubed

Seasonings & Sweeteners

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC) to prepare for roasting the fruit mixture.
  2. Prepare Fruit: Wash the cranberries thoroughly and place them into a large 8×13-inch (2-3 quart) casserole dish. Peel, core, and cut the apples into cubes roughly the same size as the cranberries, then add them to the dish.
  3. Add Flavorings: Sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, ground cloves, and lemon juice over the fruit. Toss everything together gently until the ingredients are evenly combined.
  4. Roast the Mixture: Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and roast for 45-55 minutes. Stir the mixture at 30 minutes and again at 45 minutes to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking.
  5. Check Doneness and Adjust Flavors: The relish is ready when it reaches a thick, jam-like consistency. Taste and adjust the sweetness or acidity by adding more brown sugar or lemon juice if desired.
  6. Serve or Store: Serve the relish warm as a side dish or allow it to cool and refrigerate for later use.

Notes

  • Use crisp apples like Granny Smith or Fuji for the best texture and flavor.
  • For a less sweet relish, reduce the brown sugar to 1/3 cup or adjust to taste.
  • This relish complements poultry dishes, especially turkey, and pairs well with pork and cheese plates.
  • Store leftover relish in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • You can add a pinch of nutmeg or ginger for additional warmth and complexity.
