Spicy Dill Pickle Popcorn is a flavorful and tangy snack combining crispy homemade popcorn with a zesty blend of dill, garlic, onion, and a hint of heat from cayenne pepper and hot sauce. Enhanced with the distinctive pickle flavor from vinegar powder and optional pickle juice, this popcorn offers a unique twist perfect for movie nights or anytime snacking.

Ingredients

For the Popcorn:

  • ½ cup popcorn kernels (yields about 8 cups popped)
  • 2 tbsp neutral oil (vegetable, canola, or coconut)

For the Spicy Dill Pickle Seasoning:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp dried dill weed
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp white vinegar powder or citric acid (for tangy pickle flavor)
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (adjust for spice level)
  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika (adds depth)
  • 1 tbsp pickle juice (optional, for extra pickle kick)
  • ½ tsp hot sauce (optional, for heat boost)

Instructions

  1. Pop the Popcorn: In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add a few popcorn kernels and cover with a lid. Once those test kernels pop, add the remaining ½ cup of kernels, cover, and shake the pot occasionally to prevent burning. When popping slows to about one pop per second, remove the pot from heat and let it sit covered for 30 seconds before uncovering.
  2. Make the Spicy Dill Pickle Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine dried dill weed, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, vinegar powder (or citric acid), cayenne pepper, and smoked paprika. Mix well to create a balanced seasoning blend.
  3. Season the Popcorn: Transfer the warm, freshly popped popcorn to a large mixing bowl. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the popcorn, tossing as you go to coat all pieces. For added tang, lightly spritz the popcorn with pickle juice, then sprinkle the spice blend over the snack while tossing continuously to distribute the flavors evenly. If desired, add hot sauce for an extra heat boost and mix thoroughly.
  4. Serve & Enjoy! Serve the spicy dill pickle popcorn immediately while it’s warm and crispy for the best texture and flavor. Perfect for snacking during movie nights or any time you crave a flavorful treat.

Notes

  • Avoid overusing pickle juice to prevent soggy popcorn; vinegar powder or citric acid provide tang without moisture.
  • Toss popcorn while still warm and use melted butter to help seasoning stick evenly.
  • For a stronger pickle flavor, mist popcorn lightly with pickle juice before seasoning.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper and hot sauce amounts to control spice level.
  • Best enjoyed fresh. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • To re-crisp stored popcorn, warm in a 250°F oven for 5 minutes.
