This Sweet Potato Casserole recipe combines creamy mashed sweet potatoes with a crunchy, cinnamon-spiced pecan topping, baked to golden perfection. Ideal for cozy dinners or holiday gatherings, it delivers a delightful balance of soft texture and nutty crunch, enhanced by warm spices and buttery richness.

Ingredients

Sweet Potato Mash

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt, to taste

Topping

  • 1 cup pecans, crushed or chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a medium baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Boil Sweet Potatoes: Place the peeled and chopped sweet potatoes into a large pot and cover them with salted water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Simmer Potatoes: Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer the sweet potatoes until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork, about 15 minutes.
  4. Drain and Mash: Drain the sweet potatoes thoroughly and transfer them to a mixing bowl. Mash them with a masher or fork until smooth and creamy.
  5. Mix Mash Ingredients: Stir in the melted butter, milk, and a pinch of salt into the mashed sweet potatoes until well combined and creamy.
  6. Spread Sweet Potatoes: Evenly spread the mashed sweet potatoes into the prepared baking dish, smoothing the surface with the back of a spoon for an even layer.
  7. Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, mix the crushed pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter until well combined to form the topping mixture.
  8. Add Topping: Sprinkle the pecan topping mixture evenly over the sweet potato layer in the baking dish.
  9. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the casserole bubbles gently around the edges.
  10. Rest and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow it to settle and enhance flavors. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use a sharp knife or peeler to avoid mushy sweet potato pieces when peeling.
  • Keep an eye on the topping in the final baking minutes to avoid burning and ensure it remains crispy and golden brown.
  • If the sweet potato mash is too thick or dry, add a little more milk to reach desired creaminess.
  • Stir the mash well to eliminate lumps and evenly distribute seasoning for the best texture.
  • The casserole should bubble gently around the edges when done; if needed, bake a few more minutes.
