These Turkey Avocado Patties are a nutritious and delicious meal perfect for babies starting baby-led weaning (BLW), toddlers, and kids. Made with ground turkey thigh meat, ripe avocado, and fragrant spices, these mini patties are tender, flavorful, and easy to hold. They can be pan-fried or oven-baked to suit your cooking preference, and are ideal for introducing wholesome proteins and healthy fats to little ones. The recipe is customizable for egg-free diets and can be enhanced with additional herbs and veggies.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey (preferably thigh meat)
  • 1 large ripe avocado, diced
  • 1 medium onion, diced (or 1 tsp onion powder)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg (see notes for egg-free version)
  • 3/4 tsp ground coriander seed
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/3 tsp sea salt (only for babies older than 12 months)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (only for babies older than 12 months)
  • Fat for frying (oil, ghee, butter, or animal fat)

Instructions

  1. Prepare The Ingredients: Dice the onion and avocado and mince the garlic into small pieces. Having all ingredients prepped makes mixing easier and more efficient.
  2. Combine: In a bowl, mix the ground turkey, raw egg, diced avocado, diced onion, minced garlic, lemon juice, ground coriander, sea salt, and black pepper. Be careful not to overmix; use pressing and folding motions to combine just enough, as overworking will make the mixture too soft and hard to shape.
  3. Form Mini Patties: Scoop about 1/2 tablespoon of the mixture and roll into a ball. Flatten the ball uniformly in your palm or with a spatula to ensure even cooking inside.
  4. Fry The Turkey Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat with your chosen fat until hot (the fat should sizzle when patties are added). Place the patties in the skillet, cooking about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Avoid cooking on too high heat to allow the patties to cook thoroughly inside without burning outside.
  5. Serve: Remove patties from the skillet and let cool slightly before serving to little ones. These patties can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Egg-free option: substitute egg with about 2 tablespoons of flour or omit egg entirely. The texture will be firmer but still workable.
  • Enhance flavor by adding cheese, fresh herbs, or finely chopped vegetables into the mixture.
  • If ground turkey is unavailable, ground chicken is a great substitute.
  • Oven Baking Option: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place mini patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake uncovered for 18-20 minutes until cooked through.
  • Storage: Store leftover patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
  • Make Ahead: Form patties and freeze raw on a parchment-lined tray. Once frozen, transfer to a plastic bag and store for up to 3-4 months.
