These Turkey Meatballs are a healthy, simple meal perfect for babies and toddlers. Made with lean ground turkey, cooked rice, and finely chopped vegetables, they are baked to tender, flavorful perfection. The recipe is designed to be gentle on young palates while providing balanced nutrition and a comforting texture.

Ingredients

Meatball Ingredients

  • 1 pound 93% lean ground turkey (can use beef or chicken)
  • 3/4 cup cooked rice (150g)
  • 3 teaspoons sesame oil, divided
  • 1 cup finely chopped vegetables of choice (100g) (broccoli, carrots, spinach recommended)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly oil a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Chop Vegetables: Add the vegetables to a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Alternatively, finely chop the vegetables by hand for a suitable texture for toddlers.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 teaspoon of sesame oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped vegetables and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Then transfer the cooked vegetables to a large mixing bowl.
  4. Combine Rice and Seasonings: To the bowl with the vegetables, add the cooked rice, remaining 2 teaspoons of sesame oil, and garlic powder. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined. If the cooked rice feels too hard, microwave it briefly to soften before mixing.
  5. Mix in Ground Turkey: Add the ground turkey to the bowl. Using your hands, gently mix the meat with the vegetable and rice mixture. Be careful not to overwork the meat to keep the meatballs tender.
  6. Shape Meatballs: Wet your hands slightly to prevent sticking and form the mixture into small-sized meatballs. An ice cream scooper is highly recommended to create uniformly sized balls for even cooking.
  7. Prepare for Baking: Place the formed meatballs on the prepared baking sheet. In a small oven-safe dish, add some water and set it on the baking sheet alongside the meatballs to maintain moisture during baking.
  8. Bake Meatballs: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, flipping the meatballs halfway through the cooking time to ensure they cook evenly and develop a slight crust.

Notes

  • Combine all ingredients before adding the ground turkey to allow gentle mixing and keep meatballs tender.
  • Avoid overworking the meat; use your hands just enough to combine ingredients.
  • Use a small ice cream scooper to shape meatballs evenly.
  • Wet your hands slightly when shaping to prevent mixture from sticking and inadvertent overmixing.
  • Store meatballs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
  • Freeze cooked meatballs for up to 3 months; flash freezing is recommended for best texture.
